The groupers natural habitat includes open seas and coral reefs, shallow lagoon and seaward reefs, at a depth range of 25 – 147 m. They move around considerably within a single reef, though often no further than 500 meters (1,600 ft) from it. There have been a few cases where fish have moved from one reef to another, towards or away from spawning sites.
